I want to thank you so much for all the notes of encouragement I received
during the past month and half. It was a trying time for sure, but my Step-
Father is now on the mend, and I am the grandmother of a beautiful baby
girl, Noel Ann Marie. A couple things changed. Noel was to be born on
December 15, and her name was to be Faith, but both those were not to be!
We feel so blessed and honored to have such wonderful friends at Recipe

German Sausage Chowder
Shared by Treva
Source: The Daily Dish
Yummy and warm... polska kielbasa, potatoes and Swiss cheese make up this
satisfying chowder. This is also delicious with Cheddar cheese in place of
the Swiss.
Makes 8 servings.
3 cubes chicken bouillon
5 medium potatoes, cubed
1 (16 ounce) package kielbasa sausage, sliced
1 onion, diced
1 small head cabbage, cored and sliced
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 pound Swiss cheese, shredded
Salt and pepper to taste
Place the bouillon cubes, onion, potatoes, and cabbage into a large soup
pot. Pour in enough water to cover the vegetables by about 1 inch. Bring to
a boil, then simmer over medium heat for 15 minutes.
Add the sausage, and cook for an additional 20 minutes. Reduce heat to low,
and stir in cheese and evaporated milk.
Cook just until heated through and cheese is melted - do not allow the soup
to boil. Remove from heat, and serve immediately.

Kitty Litter Cake
Shared by Aggie in Mesa, Arizona
1 box spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 box white cake mix
1 package white sandwich cookies
1 large package vanilla instant pudding mix
A few drops green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Rolls or equivalent
Serving "dishes and utensils":
1 NEW cat-litter box, washed well and dried
1 NEW pooper scooper, Washed well and dried
Prepare and bake cake mixes, according to directions, in any size pan.
Prepare pudding and chill. Crumble cookies in small batches in blender or
food processor. Add a few drops of green food coloring to 1 cup of cookie
crumbs. Mix with a fork or shake in a jar. Set aside.
When cakes are at room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl. Toss
with half of the remaining cookie crumbs and enough pudding to make the
mixture moist but not soggy. Pour mixture into litter box.
Unwrap 3 Tootsie Rolls and heat in a microwave until soft and pliable.
Shape the blunt ends into slightly curved points. Repeat with three more
rolls. Bury the rolls decoratively in the cake mixture. Sprinkle remaining
white cookie crumbs over the mixture, then scatter green crumbs lightly
over top.
Heat 5 more Tootsie Rolls until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the
cake and sprinkle with crumbs from the litter box. Heat the remaining
Tootsie Roll until pliable and hang it over the edge of the box. Place box
on a sheet of newspaper and serve with scooper.
Enjoy...... if you can!

Give 'Em Bread: Supporting the Troops
Our troops deserve our support. They have a tough, dangerous job a long way
from homeserving us. Fresh, homemade bread helps. So we now pay part of
the shipping to APO addresses. We also pay for Parcel Airlift to expedite
deliveries.
We don't know how many bread machines there are in the barracks of Iraq and
Afghanistan but we do know that fresh bread is really appreciated. Listen
to what a pilot in Afghanistan says:
You've got some very happy people here in Afghanistan! You wouldn't
believe how much the smell of bread baking improves the fellas' morale.
And a sergeant in Iraq writes:
Not many soldiers have bread machines here but the ones that do are always
loaning them out. I had never eaten fresh bread from a machine till I
arrived here. It means a lot to the guys to have some of the simple things.
It reminds us of home
Many solders report that they pass the community bread machine around and
that it runs nearly 24 hours a day.
Bread means sandwiches. When they go out on patrol, they can take
sandwiches with them. One lieutenant reported that they took a small
generator with them on a mission so that they could run their bread machine.
If you have a friend or loved one overseas, consider sending him or her a
bread machine and a few mixes.
Our friends at The Prepared Pantry ship mixes to Iraq and Afghanistan and pay
part of the cost of shipping. For more information regarding shipping mixes to
the military, click here.

I recently acquired a gardenia plant and I live in Washington State which,
as I'm sure you know, isn't exactly ideal for growing gardenias. It's
currently December and the plant is in bud. A couple of the buds have
begun to open slightly since I acquired the plant a week ago. I keep the
plant in the north/east window during the day and rotate it a few times to
get light as other locations are not an option. With the heat on the house
is usually at 68F, but I figure since the plant is near a window perhaps
that does lower the temperature a bit. Please outline a care schedule and
requirements the plant might need while in this stage and in others. I've
looked online and found plenty of information specifying what I should do
regularly in certain months, but it's very difficult to apply that here
since it is budding now versus in summer or spring. I do have some Miracid
fertilizer, but am unsure when to use it and how often at this stage.
A. Indoor plants, especially ones which may have been forced prior to
arrival in a home, will bloom at various odd times of the year. Care of
this plant does not vary by season. Your practices are sound but keep an
eye on the amount of cold temperature the plant receives through the window
pane as drafts cause bud drop and do not allow room to drop below 65F. Give
it good indirect light as much as possible with no direct sun between 10am
and 2pm and water only when the soil surface is dry to the touch [do not
overwater as this can cause root rot and bloom burst.] Give it a full
soaking each time and empty the bottom saucer and discard. Apply the
Miracid once every two weeks at one teaspoon per gallon water. Remove brown
leaves, flowers and buds to prevent spread of disease.

I have 2 rose bushes that are not doing well at all. I have chose to dig
them up, but would like to know when to replant new ones. I live in
Jacksonville, FL.
A.
Florida roses are grown in Florida specifically for Florida soil and
climate. These roses are very resistant to nematode damage and well suited
to the sandy soils of this state. The biggest mistake most Florida
gardeners make is planting rose bushes that are field grown in climates
very different and budded on rootstocks which are not productive and do not
live long in Florida. Buy roses grown for Florida gardens because Florida
has a 12-month gardening climate, the rose is an evergreen shrub that will
grow and bloom for 5-20 years in the garden if cared for properly. Planting
is best done in November in southern Florida and in December or January in
northern Florida. They should be planted where they will receive a minimum
of 6 hours of sunlight preferably where they can receive the morning sun
because it will dry the dew on the leaves and lessen the chance of black
spot. Roses should be planted in rich but well-drained soil. Since sand
drains too quickly and does not hold nutrients well it should be improved
by adding amendments such as peat, composted cow manure, and compost. Add
as much as 4-6" of any or all of these amendments to improve your soil.
Roses are heavy feeders and a wide variety of fertilizer is recommended to
feed them. The secret to feeding Florida roses is to apply fertilizer once
a month. It is recommended that newly planted roses should not be
fertilized until new growth emerges, although 1/2 cup of Milorganite may be
applied as a top dressing on new plantings. Water your roses well once a
week unless there is rain. Water in the morning so that the leaves are not
wet during the night as wet leaves can host foliage diseases.
Hybrid Tea Roses Recommended for Florida:
Red -- Crimson Glory, Etoile de Holland, Mirandy, Tropicana
Pink -- Charlotte, Armstrong, Dainty Bess (single)
Yellow -- Eclipse, Golden Scepter, Kings Ransom, Lady Elgin,
Mrs. P.S. DuPont
White -- K.A. Victoria, White Knight
Bicolor -- Comtesse Vandal, Lucky Piece, Pres. Herbert Hoover, Talisman
Floribunda Varieties Recommended for Florida
Red -- El Capitan, Floradora, Fusilier, Red Pinocchio
Pink -- Fashion, Pink Chiffon, Pinocchio
Yellow -- Allgold, Gold Cup, Goldilocks
White -- Ivory, Fashion, Saratoga
Bicolor -- Circus, Rumba
When buying your rose bushes remember that you should buy your roses from a
reputable nursery to prevent disappointment and poor quality rose bushes;
Florida container-grown roses are the best buy because you can see the rose
in flower when you buy it and you can be fairly sure that the plant is
healthy and vigorous; many rose bushes have "All American Rose Selection"
on their tags. This means that the rose has been tested and has
outperformed other varieties under an assortment of soils and climates and
will undoubtedly perform well in your garden.
