1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup butter
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon maple flavoring
2/3 cup scalded milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon maple flavoring
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup nuts
2 packages yeast
4 1/2 to 5 cups sifted flour
2 unbeaten eggs
Soften the 2 packages of yeast in 1/2 cup warm water.
Combine in large mixing bowl the first 5 ingredients in order: sugar, butter,
salt, maple flavoring and scalded milk. Cool to lukewarm. Stir in the unbeaten
eggs and softened yeast. Add the flour gradually to form stiff dough. Knead
on floured surface until smooth. Place in greased bowl and cover and let set
till doubled in size...about 1 1/2 hours.
Combine the last five ingredients in a separate bowl: sugar, brown sugar, maple
flavoring, cinnamon and nuts...to make a sugar mixture.
Divide the dough into 3 equal balls. On lightly floured surface, roll out one
ball to 4 to 16 inch circle. Fit into bottom of greased pizza pan of same size.
Brush dough with 2 teaspoons melted butter and sprinkle with 1/3 cup of the sugar
mixture on top.
Use a glass to make a 2-inch circle in center of dough. Do not cut through dough.
Cut from outside just to circle forming 16 pie-shaped wedges. Twist each of
the 3 layers wedge 4 times. Let rise in warm place until light and doubled in
size, 40-50 minutes.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Drizzle with 1 1/2
cups confectioners' sugar, 1 teaspoon maple flavoring and 2-3 tablespoons milk,
combined. Decorate with maraschino cherries.
