Orange Dumplings

Ingredients

Orange Sauce

  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel
  • 3/4 cup boiling water

Dumplings

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

Orange Sauce

  1. In a 1 1/2 quart saucepan combine orange juice, sugar, butter, cornstarch and orange peel.
  2. Add boiling water. Boil for 10 minutes.
  3. Pour into a 10 x 8 x 2 inch baking dish.

Dumplings

  1. Cream butter and sugar.
  2. Add flour, baking powder and salt alternately with the milk.
  3. Drop by tablespoons into orange sauce.
  4. Combine nuts and nutmeg. Sprinkle over dumplings.
  5. Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in a dumpling comes out cleanly.
  6. Serve dumplings with sauce spooned on top. Top with whipped cream (optional).
