Boiled Custard
This is very similar to eggnog, but flavored with orange.
Ingredients
- 1 gallon sweet milk
- 9 eggs, separated
- 3 cups granulated sugar
- Peel of 1 sweet navel orange, cut into fine shreds with a sharp knife
Instructions
- Mix the milk, egg yolks and sugar in a LARGE pot and bring to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally. WATCH THE POT CLOSELY so it does not boil over. As soon as it reaches a rolling boil, remove from heat and fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites and shreds of orange peel. Bring just to the boil once more.
- Remove from heat at once, and allow to cool to room temperature; then refrigerate in large jars or a crock.
- Serve in small punch cups, from a pre-chilled punchbowl, with fruitcake or cookies.
