Martha Washington's Colonial Chocolate


This was George Washington's favorite hot chocolate.



  1. Mix cocoa and cold water to a smooth paste in a saucepan.
  2. Stir in the 2 cups water, sugar and milk. Bring to a boil and blend in cornstarch which has been dissolved in the cold milk.
  3. Boil for 3 minutes longer.
  4. Remove from heat and set in a warm place.
  5. Beat egg and hot water until light and foamy.
  6. Pour half of egg mixture into a pitcher.
  7. Blend in vanilla extract.
  8. Add to chocolate slowly.
  9. Pour remaining egg mixture over top.
  10. Serve.
