Overnight French Toast

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 sticks butter
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup Karo syrup*
  • 1 large loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch slices
  • 10 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Melt butter, brown sugar, and Karo syrup in saucepan over medium heat, stirring until smooth. Bring to a boil. Pour caramelized mixture into a 13 x 9-inch baking pan. Arrange French bread slices on top of caramelized mixture.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Pour over French bread slices. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
  3. Cover baker with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  4. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  5. Remove plastic wrap. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until puffed and golden brown. Let stand for 5 minutes.
  6. Serve with fresh fruit.

Notes

* Maple syrup may be substituted for Karo syrup. The following optional ingredients may be added to the caramelized mixture: walnuts, raisins, coconut, dried cranberries and/or mixed dried berries.
