Maple Nut Twists
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon maple flavoring
- 2/3 cup scalded milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon maple flavoring
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup nuts
- 2 packages yeast
- 4 1/2 to 5 cups sifted all-purpose flour
- 2 unbeaten eggs
Instructions
- Soften the 2 packages of yeast in 1/2 cup warm water.
- Combine in large mixing bowl the first 5 ingredients in order: sugar, butter, salt, maple flavoring and scalded milk. Cool to lukewarm.
- Stir in the unbeaten eggs and softened yeast.
- Add the flour gradually to form stiff dough. Knead on floured surface until smooth. Place in greased bowl and cover and let set till doubled in size...about 1 1/2 hours.
- Combine the last five ingredients in a separate bowl: sugar, brown sugar, maple flavoring, cinnamon and nuts...to make a sugar mixture.
- Divide the dough into 3 equal balls. On lightly floured surface, roll out one ball to 4 to 16 inch circle. Fit into bottom of greased pizza pan of same size. Brush dough with 2 teaspoons melted butter and sprinkle with 1/3 cup of the sugar mixture on top.
- Use a glass to make a 2-inch circle in center of dough. Do not cut through dough. Cut from outside just to circle forming 16 pie-shaped wedges. Twist each of the 3 layers wedge 4 times. Let rise in warm place until light and doubled in size, 40-50 minutes.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.
- Drizzle with 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, 1 teaspoon maple flavoring and 2-3 tablespoons milk, combined.
- Decorate with maraschino cherries.
