Chocolate Twinkie Cake

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 (18.25 ounce) box chocolate cake mix*
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 small box instant chocolate pudding

Filling

  • 1 cup milk
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Frosting

  • 1 can dark fudge ready-to-spread frosting

Instructions

Cake

  1. Mix all ingredients together and bake cake according to package time and temperature.
  2. Allow cake to cool, then split in half.

Filling

  1. Mix milk and flour together in saucepan. Boil until mixture is thick. Cool.
  2. Next beat this mixture with a mixer until fluffy.
  3. Add remaining ingredients one at a time beating well after each addition.
  4. Spread filling between cake layers.

Frosting

  1. Frost cake with entire can of ready-to-spread frosting. You can add a pinch of baking powder to frosting before spreading.
  2. Let cake stand for at least 6 hours to develop flavor.

Notes

* 18.25 ounce boxes of cake mix have been replaced by 16.5 ounce and 15.25 ounce boxes. To compensate for the volume loss in a 16 ounce box, whisk 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour into the dry cake mix before proceeding with the recipe. To compensate for the volume loss in a 15.25 ounce box, add 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon baking powder.
