Ingredients

  • 1 (18.25 ounce) devil's food or German chocolate cake mix*
  • 1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 small box instant chocolate fudge pudding mix
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur
  • 2 tablespoons finely shredded orange peel
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate pieces
  • Confectioners' sugar

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour** a 10-inch fluted tube pan; set aside.
  2. In large mixing bowl, combine cake mix, sour cream, oil, water, eggs, pudding mix, liqueur, orange peel and cinnamon. Scraping sides of bowl constantly, beat with an electric mixer on low speed until blended. Beat on medium speed for 4 minutes.
  3. Stir in chocolate pieces.
  4. Pour into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven until a wooden pick inserted near center comes out clean, 50 to 60 minutes.
  5. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes.
  6. Invert onto rack to cool thoroughly.
  7. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.

Notes

* 18.25 ounce boxes of cake mix have been replaced by 16.5 ounce and 15.25 ounce boxes. To compensate for the volume loss in a 16 ounce box, whisk 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour into the dry cake mix before proceeding with the recipe. To compensate for the volume loss in a 15.25 ounce box, add 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon baking powder.
