Chocolate Butter Gooey Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 (18.25 ounce) box devil's food cake mix*
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick - 8 tablespoons) butter, melted
  • 3 eggs
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (16 ounce) box confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Combine cake mix, melted butter and 1 egg in a bowl, mixing well. Press into the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch glass-baking dish.
  3. Beat cream cheese and confectioners' sugar in a bowl until light.
  4. Add the 2 remaining eggs and mix well. Spread over the chocolate cake mix layer.
  5. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes.
  7. Cool, then cut into squares.

Notes

* 18.25 ounce boxes of cake mix have been replaced by 16.5 ounce and 15.25 ounce boxes. To compensate for the volume loss in a 16 ounce box, whisk 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour into the dry cake mix before proceeding with the recipe. To compensate for the volume loss in a 15.25 ounce box, add 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon baking powder.
