Chocolate Caramel Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 (18.25 ounce) box German chocolate cake mix*
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 cup nuts, chopped
  • 8 ounces chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 (14 ounce) bag caramels

Instructions

  1. Mix together the cake mix, butter and water.
  2. Add nuts and pat half of mixture into 13 x 9 inch cake pan.
  3. Bake for 6 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees F.
  4. Melt caramels in milk.
  5. Take first mixture out of oven and while still warm, sprinkle chocolate chips over top.
  6. Drizzle melted caramels over chocolate chips.
  7. Crumble other half of cake mixture on top of caramel.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees F.
  9. Cool and cut into bars.

Notes

* 18.25 ounce boxes of cake mix have been replaced by 16.5 ounce and 15.25 ounce boxes. To compensate for the volume loss in a 16 ounce box, whisk 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour into the dry cake mix before proceeding with the recipe. To compensate for the volume loss in a 15.25 ounce box, add 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon baking powder.
