Ingredients

Cookies

  • 1 (18.25 ounce) box dark chocolate cake mix*
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa

Filling

  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

Cookies

  1. Mix cake mix following directions on package adding the flour and cocoa. Mix well. Drop batter by spoonsful onto a greased baking sheet.
  2. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 to 15 minutes depending on size of spoon used.
  3. Remove from oven, cool and pair up. Fill with filling.

Filling

  1. Mix flour and milk in saucepan. Cook over low heat until thick. Put in bowl and cool.
  2. Cream butter and shortening for 4 minutes with electric mixer.
  3. Add sugar gradually and beat for 4 minutes.
  4. Add flour paste and beat 4 more minutes.
  5. Add vanilla extract and blend.

Notes

* 18.25 ounce boxes of cake mix have been replaced by 16.5 ounce and 15.25 ounce boxes. To compensate for the volume loss in a 16 ounce box, whisk 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour into the dry cake mix before proceeding with the recipe. To compensate for the volume loss in a 15.25 ounce box, add 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon baking powder.
