"Old Yeller" Buttermilk Cake

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Frosting

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Cake: Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs mix well.
  2. Combine dry ingredients and add alternately with buttermilk. Stir in vanilla extract.
  3. Pour into a 9 x 13-inch greased pan and bake at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes.
  4. Frosting: Combine sugar, milk and butter in small pan. Bring to a full boil and boil 1 minute remove and add vanilla extract.
  5. Pour over hot cake and let sit until absorbed.
