Red Velvet Cake




  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 (1 ounce) bottle red food color
  • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Red Velvet Frosting

  • 5 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Cake: Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 13 x 9-inch baking pan.
  2. Combine sifted flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa in bowl.
  3. Cream oil and sugar in separate bowl.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beat well after each addition.
  5. Add food coloring, mix until well blended.
  6. Combine buttermilk and baking soda. Mix well. Add to oil-sugar mixture alternately with dry ingredients.
  7. Add vinegar and vanilla extract. Mix well and bake 25 to 30 minutes.
  8. Frost with Red Velvet Frosting.
  9. Red Velvet Frosting: Cook flour and milk until thick. Stir constantly. Cool COMPLETELY.
  10. Cream margarine and sugar well.
  11. Add vanilla extract; beat.
  12. Add flour and milk mixture. Beat until right consistency to spread. Will get really fluffy.
