Shawneetown Cake



  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa


  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts


  1. Cake: In large mixing bowl, combine eggs and buttermilk.
  2. Beat in sugar, flour, vanilla extract, cinnamon and baking soda: set aside.
  3. Combine butter, water and cocoa in medium saucepan; bring to boil. Reduce heat and continue boiling for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, then, add to butter and beat until smooth and well blended.
  4. Pour into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  5. Bake in preheated 400 degree F oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool.
  6. Spread evenly with Icing.
  7. Icing: Combine butter, milk and cocoa in a medium saucepan; bring to boil, reduce heat and continue boiling 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Beat with sugar until smooth.
  9. Stir in vanilla extract and nuts.
