Hasenour's Barbecue Sauce

Yield: 3 quarts

Ingredients

  • 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 (12 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 1 (32 ounce) bottle ketchup
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Tabasco
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons horseradish (do not use creamy)
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 quart water

Instructions

  1. In a large kettle combine all ingredients. Bring to a simmer and cook 15 minutes.
  2. Store in refrigerator.
  3. Use with pork, ribs and chicken.

Notes

For a smoky flavor, add 1 tablespoon liquid smoke. For a hotter sauce, add 1 tablespoon dry mustard, 1 tablespoon chili powder and Tabasco to taste. For still another flavor, add 1 lemon, sliced thin. Remove after simmering.
