Black Forest Brownies

Ingredients

Brownie

  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 eggs, well beaten
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup maraschino cherries, chopped
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

Icing

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 6 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped


Instructions

  1. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter. Remove from heat and stir in cocoa until smooth.
  3. Blend in eggs, sugar and extracts.
  4. Stir in flour mixture, cherries and nuts. Pour into a 13 x 9-inch pan.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes.
  6. To make icing, blend butter, vanilla extract, sugar, cocoa and milk in a bowl until smooth. Spread on hot brownies.
  7. Sprinkle with nuts.
