Sugar Cookies, Bakery-Style

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour (measure after sifting)

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and butter.
  2. Add egg and extracts.
  3. Mix together flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Stir into creamed mixture.
  4. Chill for 2 or 3 hours or overnight.
  5. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  6. Roll out on a lightly powdered board until dough is 1/4 inch (for crisper cookies) to 1/2 inch thick (for soft cookies.) Cut with cookie cutters and place on cookie sheet.
  7. Bake for 7 to 9 minutes.
