Crackle Top Ginger Cookies


  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup sorghum or molasses
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon


  1. Cream sugar and shortening. Add egg and mix well. Stir in sorghum or molasses. Add dry ingredients; mix well.
  2. Chill dough thoroughly.
  3. Roll dough into 1-inch diameter balls. Roll balls in sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheet 2 inches apart.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 8 to 9 minutes, or until the bottoms are golden.

Yield: 4 dozen cookies
