Black Walnut Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup lard (or shortening)
  • 1/3 cup oleo (margarine) or butter
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons thick cream or 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • Powdered sugar, sifted

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 325 degrees F.
  2. Cream lard and butter.
  3. Add powdered sugar and cream, mixing until light.
  4. Add vanilla extract, stirring well.
  5. Sift flour and baking soda together. Add walnuts, and add to creamed mixture.
  6. Shape into small balls.
  7. Bake until delicate brown, about 20 to 30 minutes.
  8. As soon as balls are cool enough, roll in powdered sugar.
