Amish Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce



Bread Pudding

  • 4 cups bread crumbs (day-old bread)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ground cinnamon for top

Vanilla Sauce

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Bread Pudding: Place bread crumbs in a buttered 1 1/2-quart baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, scald milk, then add butter, sugar, eggs, salt, raisins and vanilla extract. Blend well.
  4. Pour over the bread crumbs; sprinkle with cinnamon.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 to 35 minutes or until top is golden.
  6. Cut into squares and serve with warm Vanilla sauce.
  7. Vanilla Sauce: Mix together sugar and cornstarch well.
  8. Add butter, boiling water and vanilla extract; cook stirring constantly, until thickened but, pourable.

Yield: 4 servings
