Sandwich and Wrap Recipes
Gyros
Yield: 4 servings
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef or lamb
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 (6 inch diameter) pita breads
- 2 cups shredded lettuce
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon snipped fresh mint leaves or 1 teaspoon dried mint leaves
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 small cucumber, seeded and chopped
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
Instructions
- Mix beef or lamb, water, lemon juice, salt, cumin, oregano, pepper, garlic and onion. Shape into 4 thin patties. Cook patties in oil over medium heat, turning frequently, until done, about 10 to 12 minutes.
- Split each pita bread halfway around edge with a sharp knife. Separate to form pocket. Place patty in each pocket; top with lettuce.
- Mix yogurt, snipped mint and sugar; stir in cucumber. Spoon onto lettuce; top with tomato.
