Swedish Meatballs


  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee
  • 3/4 cup hot milk
  • 1 1/2 cups soft breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup minced or finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons water


  1. Dissolve coffee in hot milk; pour over breadcrumbs.
  2. Cook onion in 2 tablespoons oil (or less) until soft; add to breadcrumbs.
  3. Add beef, seasonings and egg. Mix well.
  4. Form into 1-inch ball.
  5. Roll meatballs in flour and brown in remaining oil, or to taste.
  6. Add evaporated milk, cover and simmer about 5 minutes.
  7. Remove meat from pan into a chafing dish for serving.
  8. For gravy, combine the 1 teaspoon instant coffee and remaining flour.
  9. Blend with 2 tablespoons water.
  10. Add to gravy in pan. Stir until thickened.
  11. Pour over meatballs.

Yield: 6 servings
