Greek Easter Cookies recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg yolk (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a cookie sheet.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Add the vanilla extract to the milk, and add the baking powder to the flour.
  5. Using a wooden spoon, add the milk, a little at a time, alternating with a little flour, mixing in well after each addition.
  6. Once it is all mixed in, use your hands to knead it a little until it is a smooth, easy to handle dough. If necessary, add more flour if it is too moist. Avoid overworking the dough.
  7. Break off pieces of dough and shape the cookies however you like.
  8. Mix the egg yolk with about 1 teaspoon of water and brush over the tops of all the cookies to give a warm golden color.
  9. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes.
  10. Cool cookies on a wire rack.
